A Guide to Lyme Regis: Art, Coast & Colour
A quintessential town where Dorset meets Devon and along the iconic Jurassic coast, Lyme Regis has been attracting painters, writers, and wanderers for centuries. Jane Austen set scenes here. John Constable painted the Cobb. And today, artists continue to return, season after season, drawn by the quality of light, the drama of the cliffs, and the ever-changing sea.
Lyme Regis Harbour and the Cobb
The Cobb, Lyme's ancient stone harbour wall, is perhaps the town's most iconic feature. Curving out into the bay like a protective arm, it has sheltered fishing boats for over 700 years. At low tide, the harbour reveals fossil-rich rock pools and the reflections of colourful boats. At high tide, waves crash dramatically over the wall. Every visit offers a different scene, which is exactly why artists find it so endlessly compelling.
Our Lyme Regis Harbour and Bay print captures the harbour in its most serene state; boats at rest, the bay stretching wide, the soft Dorset light doing what it does best. It's a print that brings the smell of salt air and the sound of gulls into any room.
The Jurassic Coast: A Landscape Like No Other
Lyme Regis sits at the western end of the Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site. The cliffs here are millions of years old, and fossil hunting on the beach is the chance to trave back in time as you get a thrill of discovering a fossil. Walking east along the coast path towards Charmouth, the views back over the town and bay are breathtaking; a perfect view to have you reach for a camera, or a sketchbook.
Planning Your Visit
Lyme Regis is best explored on foot. The town centre is compact, with independent shops, galleries, and excellent fish and chips. The Marine Parade runs along the seafront, and the beach is accessible year-round. Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful, with fewer crowds before and after summer, dramatic skies, and the light at its most painterly.
